Helmut Jahn was celebrated for his forward-looking approach to technology and his elegant, reductionist aesthetic. His work earned major international awards and has been exhibited worldwide.
Born in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1940, Jahn studied engineering and architecture at the Technische Hochschule in Munich before moving to Chicago to study at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He joined C.F. Murphy Associates in 1967—later renamed JAHN in his honor—where he developed a remarkable body of work spanning large-scale residential, commercial, and civic architecture. His most iconic designs include the United Terminal at O’Hare International Airport, Berlin’s Sony Center at Potsdamer Platz, Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, the MesseTurm in Frankfurt, One Liberty Place in Philadelphia, 1000M in Chicago, and 50 West in Lower Manhattan.
Jahn tragically passed away in 2021, yet his legacy endures through his numerous accolades and the continued work of the firm. Among his honors are AIA Fellowship (1987), recognition as one of the “Ten Most Influential Living American Architects” (1991), and prestigious lifetime achievement awards from both AIA Chicago and the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (2012). The studio JAHN/ proudly carries forward his name and visionary spirit.
